Rain gutters can be an essential part of protecting your home. They protect the foundation, sides of the home, and even any plants you may have growing around the perimeter of your home. If you already have rain gutters, you know the many benefits they provide. However, if your existing rain gutters are overflowing during rain storms, it may be time to investigate why.
There are several reasons your rain gutters may be overflowing. Some of them are easier to fix than others. It is important to find out the reason behind your overflowing rain gutters and get it resolved. There are four main reasons that a gutter system will overflow.
Clogged Gutters
If there are tall trees near your roof, it is very likely that leaves and other debris are ending up on the roof and in the gutters. Debris that is on the roof can be washed into the gutters during heavy rain if you do not have leaf guard installed on your gutter system. If there is too much debris in the gutter, the water will overflow the edge of the gutters during heavy rain. This can lead to damage to your foundation and side of your home. To prevent overflow from clogged gutters, the gutters must be cleaned a few times per year or leaf guard needs to be installed.
Clogged Downspouts
Unfortunately, the gutters are not the only spot that can be clogged. Clogs can often be found in the downspouts. The debris from the roof and gutters can be pushed into the downspouts by the flowing water and lead to clogs in the downspouts. Downspouts must be cleaned whenever they have been clogged. Larger sized downspouts will lessen the likelihood of clogs. A leaf guard system will also help.
Number of Gutters or Downspouts
If the optimum number of gutters and downspouts have not been installed, this can cause your gutters to overflow and possibly damage your home. Adding some more gutters or downspouts may be all that you need to do to alleviate the overflow problem.
Too Much Rain
Sometimes, a storm may drop more rain than your gutters and downspouts can handle causing the gutters to overflow. If this happens often, you may want to consider increasing the size of your gutters or downspouts to be able to accommodate the heavier flow of water.
