Three-Tab vs. Architectural Shingles

There are two main categories of types of asphalt shingles. The two main types of asphalt shingles are 3-tab and architectural shingles.

Three-tab shingles have been around longer and are more economically priced than architectural shingles. Three-tab shingles are comprised of one flat shingle that has cut outs on the bottom portion of the shingle that make it look like three separate pieces. All of the pieces are the same size. Three-tab shingles tend to have a shorter warranty than architectural shingles.

Architectural shingles are also sometimes referred to as dimensional shingles. They started becoming available in the 1970’s for use in higher end homes. They provide a dimensional look to the roof that was originally meant to resemble wood shake roofing. Architectural shingles are more expensive than 3-tab shingles, but they also come with a longer warranty. Architectural shingles are also heavier. Most people feel that architectural shingles provide better curb appeal.
