There are several roof options available for low slope roofing. Ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymer (EPDM) is a very good choice. It has been in use in the roofing industry for several decades and has been proven to be a long lasting roofing solution.
EPDM has been in use for over 45 years in North America in waterproofing and roofing applications. The time that EPDM has been in use provides many opportunities to evaluate its longevity in actual field situations as opposed to laboratory testing.
Recent samples from 45 mil EPDM roofing systems that were approximately 30 years old have shown that the roofing membrane has help up extremely well over time. Many of the samples still met or exceeded requirements for brand new materials.
These test were done on 45 mil membranes, because that is what was being used 30 years ago. Most EPDM being installed today is either 60 mil or 90 mil. We can reasonably expect that the 60 mil and 90 mil membranes will be able to outperform the 45 mil.
