Proper Attic Ventilation

Ridge VentThere are many reasons that proper attic ventilation is important. Proper air flow through the attic must be a balanced system. Improper ventilation can lead to heat and moisture buildup in the attic leading to damage to the roof deck, attic interior and even the shingles.

One of the most important aspects of proper ventilation is not combining different types of exhaust vents. It is important to have intake vents that are placed low on the roof or at the roof edge. One type of exhaust vent should then be used. If several types of exhaust vent are used at the higher portions of the roof, one of the types can end up being used as an intake vent. This improper air flow will only affect the top portion of the roof. The lower portion will be at risk for moisture and heat buildup and long-term damage.

Another issue with using multiple exhaust vent types is that the exhaust vents are not designed to be used as intake vents. When multiple types of exhaust vents are used and therefore some start performing as intake vents, they are not properly designed for this application. When this occurs, whatever is present in the air outside can end up inside the attic. Rain, sleet, and/or debris can end up in the attic. This can lead to long term damage in the attic and the roof deck.
