Rising energy costs and strict building codes and regulations have forced the roofing industry to develop new products, as well as test many existing products to determine how energy efficient they are. Some of the new developments are adhesives, primers and sealers that are lower in volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and a wider selection of reflective membranes. One existing product that has been determined to be energy efficient is ballasted roofing.
Ballasted roofing has been available for many decades. With the increasing emphasis on energy efficiency, studies have been conducted to determine if ballasted roofing is still a good choice. Initially, roofs with high reflectance and high emittance were thought to be the only energy efficient choices. A study was conducted comparing ballasted roofs with black and white membrane roofs. Ballasted roofs were found to perform as well as white membranes. In addition, ballasted roofs do not need to be cleaned to maintain their reflectivity and have better resistance to hail damage than white membrane roofs.
