It is important to have proper ventilation for your home. For most houses with pitched roofs, the preferred method of venting the air to the outside is using continuous ridge vents.
There are several types of ridge vents available today. They are made of different materials and can come in either rolls or rigid sections. The purpose of ridge vents is to allow air to escape, but prevent rain and snow from entering the house. Shingles are often installed over the ridge vents so they blend in with the rest of the roof.
In order to install ridge vent, an opening must be cut in the top of the roof. The opening should be 6 inches from each end of the ridge and 2 inches on either side of the ridge. The ridge vent fits into the cut opening. The ridge vent should be extended to cover the 6 inches of the ridge that have not been cut.
If the ridge vent that you have chosen to install is intended to be covered with shingles, you may have two different options depending on the shingles on your roof. Some shingle lines have special hip and ridge shingles available. These shingles are ready to be added to your newly installed ridge vent. However, some shingle lines do not have special hip and ridge shingles available. In that case, you will need to find three tab shingles that are the closest match to the shingles on your roof. For these shingles, you can cut each shingle to make three ridge shingles. Using the ridge shingles, the ones you purchased or the ones you cut, cover the ridge vent by securing the shingles to vent in an overlapping pattern.
