The amount of roof ventilation area needed depends on whether or not the ceiling has a vapor barrier. One square foot of ventilating area is needed for every 150 square feet of attic floor area if there is a vapor barrier. If there is no vapor barrier, this amount must be doubled.

One of the most effective ways to provide roof ventilation is through vents placed in the soffits of the roof, located at the lowest points on the roof. Homeowners can choose between continuous soffit strip vents and rectangular vents. Continuous soffit strip vents provide the most reliable area for air intake.

The first step in installing soffit vents is cutting the opening. Use the actual vent as a template to mark the location of the vent on the soffit. Use a ¾ inch drill bit to drill a starter hole at one corner of the marked area. Next, insert a saber saw into the starter hole and cut the opening.

The next step is attaching the vent. The vent is secured to the soffit using the screws that came with the vent. The best method for securing the screws is using an electric drill with a Phillips bit.
