Ponding Water on Low Slope Roofing

Ponding water on low slope roofing can have many adverse effects on the roof system. Water that remains on the roof for 48 hours or longer is considered ponding water. The water may come from rooftop equipment or be weather related. Proper design, installation and maintenance can prevent ponding water.

One of the main problems caused by ponding water is damage to the structure of the roof deck. Ponding water can increase the load on the deck and threaten the structural integrity of the deck. As the deck is comprised, even more water can end up ponding leading to even more damage.

Ponding water can also damage the roof surface. If the water is left on the roof for a long period of time, algae and other vegetation may begin to grow on the roof. This can cause additional damage to the roof surface as well as clog drains and gutters leading to additional ponding. Dirt and debris can also accumulate in the ponded areas.

A proper design can help prevent ponding water areas. The roof needs to have an adequate slope to prevent ponding water. Certain areas may require tapered insulation to ensure that there are not areas prone to ponding. The proper location of drains, scuppers and gutters is also important.
